How to Read a Label: A Beginner's Guide to Low-Tox Living

Reading the label on a cleaning product

Going lower-tox doesn’t require a chemistry degree or a panic attack in the cleaning aisle. It starts with a calmer skill: reading the label and knowing what actually deserves your attention.

Watch for the vague words

“Fragrance” or “parfum” can legally hide dozens of undisclosed ingredients. It’s the single most common thing worth avoiding, especially in products you use daily.

Fewer ingredients, plainer names

As a rule of thumb, a short list of recognizable ingredients beats a long list of unpronounceable ones. It’s not a perfect science, but it’s a good first filter.

Don’t try to fix everything at once

Start with what you’re exposed to most — what touches your skin and your food, and what you breathe indoors. Replace those first, as things run out. Low-tox is a direction, not a destination, and gradual swaps beat throwing everything out in a fearful weekend.
