The cleaning aisle wants you to believe every surface needs its own dedicated spray. It doesn’t. Three humble staples clean the vast majority of a home — more cheaply, and with far less to store.

The three

  • Distilled white vinegar — glass, counters, hard water, and odors.
  • Bicarb (baking soda) — a gentle scrub for sinks, tubs, and pans.
  • Castile soap — a diluted all-purpose cleaner for floors and general grime.

A bottle of concentrated castile soapaffiliate lasts months because you dilute it heavily — a little goes a long way.

Mix as you go

Keep a spray bottle of half-and-half vinegar and water for daily wiping, and a shaker of bicarb by the sink. That’s a whole cleaning routine in two containers — cheaper, simpler, and far kinder to your indoor air than a shelf of single-use sprays.
